In an industrial area along No 6 Road, Hungerford Properties is building a 65,300 square-foot, sustainable, state-of-the art seafood processing plant that is the first new commercial building to be constructed using Richmond’s new green roof building alternatives. The new Albion Fisheries plant – that will bring jobs into the area both in fisheries and construction – launches with an official groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, February 14.

Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, George, Michael and Andrew Hungerford, partners of Hungerford Properties and John Milobar president of Albion Fisheries will be on hand to talk about the implications of the new development on the Richmond industrial corridor and on the B.C. economy in general.

“Most industrial buildings are simple boxes,” says Michael Hungerford. “But this one is the world-class, high performance model. It’s got all the bells and whistles, and it sets new standards for sustainability as well as for health and cleanliness from an operations standpoint.”

Aside from the sophisticated live tanks, drainage and freezer systems required by the plant, the building also features advanced environment standards. It’s the first to follow Richmond’s new alternative point system for green roof design and includes a top-of-the-line storm water management system, a TPO roof that reduces the heat island effect, permeable paving and landscaping designed with trees that provide a canopy over vehicle parking areas.

The new plant will be completed in October and operational in January, 2013. In addition to construction jobs, once completed, the new plant will transfer its 150 employees from Vancouver to Richmond, use local companies for equipment and site maintenance and at some point, create additional jobs.

“Albion is a leader in sustainable seafood and what’s exciting is building a state-of-the-art plant that will allow us to more rapidly expand our sustainable offerings,” says Albion’s John Milobar. “And through these growth initiatives, we envision employment opportunities in our company.”

Albion is owned by the largest privately held food service distributor in North America, Gordon Food Service. According to Mr. Hungerford, working with such a big international company to create a sustainable building that will reduce the long-term operating costs for Albion as well as benefit the community is a great example of business coming together to work within city requirements.
